What A Good Research Paper Looks Like: An Overview

Do you need to write a research paper If so, you will most certainly need to know what it should look like. To help you out, here is an overview of what it should contain:

Make sure you know the requirements.

A research paper is often used to explore and identify scientific, technical and social issues. Because this is the case, there are often specific guidelines to adhere to which can differ depending on the academic institution, so be sure to check the requirements for formatting issues, annotations, citations etc. You should have already been given a handout, but if you don’t have the guidelines- get hold of them! Simply ask your teacher.

Writing the introduction.

The research paper is mainly divided into the introduction, the text body chapters and the conclusion. The introduction is actually best written last. Once you have written your paper, you will have a better idea of exactly what succinct points you want to put in your introduction. The introduction should begin with the broad subject at hand before narrowing it down to the specific topic you have chosen to research. Go on to say what your aims and objectives are and state what research you have conducted. You should also declare what conclusions you hope to arrive at.

Creating the chapters.

The body text is divided into chapters. It is up to you how many chapters you should include, but be sure to plan them well. Before you even begin writing, you will need to have made a plan. This will include working out what information you want to include, what its purpose is and where to contextually include it. Work out the identity of your chapters and their content before you start writing.

End with your conclusion.

Last is the conclusion. You should recap your main points and restate how you have come to the conclusions you have reached. Summarize your findings, and if you are unable to sufficiently conclude because more research on the topic is required, then state this and present further reading references.

Find examples of visual representations.

It really helps to have a look at an actual example of a research paper; not only to study the content (to give you ideas on how best to approach things yourself), but also because it helps to visualize what the paper should look like. You will find plenty of examples online. This is a great resource.
