How Do You Write a Term Paper for College: Step-by-Step Instructions for Freshmen

  1. Read Directions: It may seem obvious, but often students overlook the instructions and miss important information, instructions, and/or requirements of a paper. Once you have familiarized yourself with the prompt and directions, you will be ready to select a topic.
  2. Select Topic: After you feel confident in your understanding of what is expected of you, you will be ready to move on to selecting a topic. The topic of your paper should be relevant, unique, and personally interesting. The topic you select will set the tone and level of success for your paper. You want to be sure the topic fits the prompt to secure all points. You wan the topic to be original, as to not bore your reader(s), and most importantly—you want to find the topic personally interesting. By selecting a topic you feel passionate about or interested in, you will make the research and writing process more fun and enjoyable for yourself.
  3. Research: Once you have selected a topic you feel will interest both you and your audience, you are ready to begin research. You will need background research, as well as specific research about your topic. The background research will provide all the vital and basic information about your topic. This information is usually presented in the introduction to familiarize your readers with what you intend to discuss. The more detailed research you have on your specific topic will be presented as support in the body paragraphs of your paper.
  4. Create Outline: Now that your research is gathered, you will want to create your outline. Your outline will be the way you organize the points you intend to make, and the support you plan to provide. Your outline uses a system of roman numerals, numbers, and letters to organize all of this information. The introduction will introduce your topic, and the points you plan to make. The body of your outline will overview the points and provide the support you will discuss. This will transition into the conclusion, where you will wrap up your thoughts and come to an overall close.
  5. Begin Writing: After you have compiled your research and created a plan for your writing, all you have to do is get started on the writing. The best tip for writing successfully is just to begin writing. Once you get started your ideas will begin to flow freely. Get your ideas out on paper for now, and edit later.
